DEADLY KIN finds protagonist Millie Kirchner visiting a history-loving friend in Boston, Gail Wiltshire, who happens to be a descendant of John and Abigail Adams. While there, Millie meets other Adams descendants, including Sam Jacobs, who along with his father is active in the preservationist movement to save historic properties in the city. Another cousin of Gail’s, Marvin Bailey, is a developer seeking the city’s approval to build a huge new shopping center, Crossroads of History, which would threaten the survival of a historic neighborhood.
Both Sam and Marvin express an interest in Millie romantically, though she’s loyal to Scott Wyrick, with whom she has had a long-distance relationship since they met in Philadelphia in DEADLY WILL. She likes Sam’s sense of humor, though his little-boy pranks annoy her. She also enjoys accompanying Marvin to a shopping center that his company is building—until, that is, she nearly falls to her death from a high floor, a situation she suspects Marvin of having engineered. A phone call purportedly from Sam entices her to a Revolutionary-War-era cemetery one night, and she nearly loses her life when she comes face to face with a murderer.
